TL;DR

  • Support heroes in Marvel Rivals are also called Strategists, and at the time of writing, there are 10 of them to choose from.
  • The strongest heroes to pick in competitive play differ with each patch and update to Marvel Rivals. This also applies to the best Strategists.
  • S-Tier Supports are those who are versatile, combining utility with healing, crowd control and defence with self-preservation.
  • S-Tier Supports in the Marvel Rivals Season 5 meta include Rocket Raccoon and Invisible Woman.
  • The worst Support hero in the game right now is Ultron.

Season 5 of Marvel Rivals has, at the time of writing, just got underway, and now is as good a time as any to get into the competitive scene. If you want to rise through the ranks as swiftly as possible, you’ll need to keep up to date with the ever-changing meta of the game. That’s where our tier list comes in.

In this tier list, we’re going to focus solely on the Strategist heroes, the Support characters in the Marvel Rivals roster. Each character will be ranked on a scale of S-Tier to D-Tier based on how effective they are in the game’s current meta.

The meta of online multiplayer games tends to change with each update. Some games only change them significantly with major updates, while others do so more frequently. Marvel Rivals is no different. With the game’s patches and changes, characters can be nerfed or buffed to make things more balanced. This can lead to changes in how heroes are played, and can alter the frequency of particular Marvel Rivals characters being played or banned in comp games.

The unique team-up feature in Marvel Rivals is another factor that affects the meta of the game. Team-ups are special abilities that are only active when certain heroes are both within the same team. Team-ups are also changed in updates. Existing team-ups can be altered, new ones can be added, and others are removed entirely. This can shift the meta significantly. At the time of writing, this Marvel Rivals tier list will be ranking the Strategists based on the Season 5 meta.

Before we get into the tier list, let’s first take a look at the S-Tier to D-Tier ranking system that we will be using. Each of the Support heroes in the game will be ranked within this system.

  • S-Tier: The top choices for the current meta that can profoundly impact gameplay. These heroes often have high win rates and pick rates, although they can also be prone to high ban rates.
  • A-Tier: Reliable characters that can work in a range of situations in the current meta, but they don’t dominate like S-Tier heroes.
  • B-Tier: Can be excellent to use in certain team compositions or on particular maps, but they are more situational than S and A-Tier heroes.
  • C-Tier: Niche heroes who can be countered easily, have been nerfed or don’t have as much power as other characters.
  • D-Tier: These heroes are not effective in the current meta. Only pros will be able to play them effectively in a comp situation.

Our rankings are based on the most recent patch notes, pro-play trends, and community performance data. Some of the community platforms we use include Rivals Tracker, Marvel Rivals.gg, and Mobalytics. Players can also look at the stats of each hero in each role via the Hero Hot List on the official Marvel Rivals website. We’ll be compiling our list with information from that, too.

S-Tier

In the current meta, Jeff The Land Shark, Invisible Woman and Rocket Raccoon are top-tier Strategists in the Marvel Rivals ranks. These heroes combine effective healing with mobility and defensive manoeuvres, making them particularly versatile.

Rocket is one of the easiest healers to use in the game, but he is also one of the strongest. Not only do his healing orbs effectively patch up allies from both short and long range when fired appropriately, but he also has some great utility abilities. This includes his B.R.B revival beacon that can bring fallen teammates back to life and his C.Y.A ultimate, which provides additional health and a boost to the team’s damage. Rocket’s jetpack and his wall-crawling also allow him to escape from certain death and regroup easily with his team.

Jeff The Land Shark has fluctuated up and down the tiers, but in Season 5, Marvel Rivals’ little demon is at his most useful. His ultimate can heal allies now and still chuck foes into an abyss, making it one of the best in the game. There’s now almost no way for a Jeff ultimate to end up as useless. Healing allies and damaging foes at the same time helps his S-Tier claim too, making Marvel Rivals’ unofficial mascot a must-pick in many cases.

Another aspect that makes Jeff so effective is speed. Jeff himself can move quickly, and the speed boost of his bubbles can get allies back into a fight rapidly. Expect to see Jeff frequently banned in ranked, especially at higher levels of play.

Invisible Woman is trickier to master as a Support hero, but her abilities make her a particularly powerful choice. She has some excellent self-preservation skills, such as Force Physics, which allows her to push enemies away or pull them closer. When cornered, using Force Physics to push enemies can be game-changing. She can also use Veiled Step to turn invisible and hide from enemies while she regenerates health. This, along with her strong shields, healing and an ultimate that can save an entire team, make Susan a top-tier choice.

A-Tier

Luna Snow from Marvel Rivals

Luna Snow is another versatile Marvel Rivals Support. Her Smooth Skate ability allows her to move quickly to avoid enemies and keep up with her team, while her Absolute Zero snowball can momentarily freeze enemies when aimed correctly. Luna’s effectiveness depends on how well the player can aim, as she is all about precision. Her healing is also aim-based, so she can become somewhat redundant if played by someone who hasn’t mastered her aiming mechanics.

Luna’s ultimate is another game-changer, as she can protect her team from a range of (though not all) powerful and potentially team-wiping attacks. The necessary precision means that Luna isn’t always as helpful as she can be, hence why she is currently A-Tier.

Much like Luna Snow, Mantis also needs a certain level of precision to play appropriately. Those playing her also need to manage her Life Orbs effectively. She only has four of them, though they regenerate throughout the game. Using them too quickly can be detrimental, so keeping track of the orbs and knowing when to use them to heal, inspire or on herself is crucial. Mantis has a handy healing and movement boost ultimate that can lead her team to victory, as well as a skill that puts enemies to sleep if aimed right. The learning curve that comes with managing her Life Orbs and the limited nature of her healing keep Mantis as an A-Tier hero for the time being.

While it’s too soon to fully judge Gambit, his kit as a flexible Strategist/Duelist hybrid seems very strong at the start of season 5. He has one-shot combo potential, can switch from damage to healing on a dime, and, in his own words, never folds. His ultimate heals allies while giving them a damage boost, but the big advantage Gambit has is that he still allows the team to be mobile. He seems to be the perfect hero for a triple Support comp, but can likely function in a duo Support team.

Given the complexity of his kit, Gambit could go up in the Marvel Rivals tier list as players find more strategies using him. Then again, he could go down as players figure out how to counter him, but he has S-Tier potential. For now, he sits in A-Tier, with room to grow as players learn the nuances of his kit.

B-Tier

Cloak and Dagger from Marvel Rivals

Loki has yet to recover from his nerfs in Season 4 and the reduction in healing and damage output. As a tough hero to learn with a high skill ceiling that used to reward great players, it’s trickier to get that same level of reward in Season 5, but the difficulty remains. As a result, Loki’s player base has shrunk considerably, no longer being a meta strategist option. He has had slight buffs in Season 5, and can still be effective, but he can’t be any higher than B-Tier.

Cloak & Dagger have suffered yet another nerf to their ultimate. A big problem Rivals has had is how easy Cloak & Dagger are to play, and when they were high in the tier list, players found it easy (relatively) to climb the Marvel Rivals ranks. Now, Cloak & Dagger pale into comparison to the likes of Luna Snow and Sue Storm, whom they used to rub shoulders with, but the auto-aim healing still makes them a great option for low ranks.

It isn’t helped that Magneto remains a top-tier Vanguard, whose ultimate directly counters Cloak and Dagger’s. In ranked, it’s almost impossible for Cloak & Dagger players to escape Magneto, but at least this hero doesn’t have to worry about being banned, being an off-meta pick.

C-Tier

Ultron from Marvel Rivals

Ultron suffers from not excelling at anything. His healing output isn’t quick enough to save teammates, especially after the Season 4.5 nerfs that he’s yet to recover from. He cannot function in a two-Strategist team comp and needs to be in a team with three Supports, but Gambit seems to do this role better without needing this triple Support comp as badly.

He used to be more viable with his faster-charging ultimate, but since his ultimate charge got nerfed, he doesn’t offer anything more than other heroes. There are those who can make Ultron work, especially in a triple Support comp, but it’s tough to justify when other strategists simply offer more. It looks even worse now that Black Widow can heal and function as a third Strategist (in all but name), better than Ultron.

Conclusion

That’s it for our Marvel Rivals Support tier list for the Season 5 meta. Don’t worry if your favourite Strategist has placed lower in our list. It doesn’t mean that you can’t play as them and enjoy yourself. It also doesn’t mean that they can’t be effective in a competitive match either. Any hero can be a great asset to the team when played in the right hands. However, the Supports in the higher tiers are a more effective choice overall for a variety of team compositions, maps, and strategies.
